ESP Plastic’s pioneering new product the ADL Enabler, ends the demoralising dependency on care for the simplest of tasks and aids rehabilitation. Radically reducing dependence on carers, the multi-functional unit, allows people who have lost functional independence to perform daily living activities and organise their personal items.

The product was designed to solve a real need. A stroke ward in an Edinburgh hospital had a pressing desire to offer patients better facilities due to the wards’ lack of accessible and spacious bathrooms. Based on the professional and technical know how of two occupational therapy staff, the ADL enabler was designed to solve this problem.

The unit enables users to independently carry out activities such as washing, brushing teeth, styling hair, reading and dining. It also provides easy access to a drawer for toiletries, mirror, towel rail and internal wash basin. It is symmetrically designed and can be easily accessed by those with the use of only one hand, a common problem following a stroke.

The top surface of the unit can also be adjusted to accommodate meals and drinks and to provide a comfortable angle to aid reading, increasing motivation as the patient becomes more independent. The ADL Enabler is reversible, hence it is suitable for right or left-hand use.

It is made up of one of ESP Plastic’s special abrasion-resistant, hardwearing and hygienic plastics, it is easily cleaned and complies with stringent hospital hygiene requirements.

The ADL enabler accelerates recovery, supports nursing resources and offers convenience and choice to users.
